MARCLAIMED to be featured at Water Projects Europe 2025: Advancing Alternative Water Resources and Circular Solutions
MARCLAIMED is participating in the upcoming Water Projects Europe – From Alternative Water to Circular Solutions, taking place on 3 December 2025 (9:00–12:30) at Thon Hotel EU, Brussels. Held within the framework of Water Knowledge Europe, this edition will unite leading EU-funded water innovation projects to explore how Europe can strengthen resilience and accelerate its transition toward a circular and climate-adapted water future. As climate change intensifies pressures on Europe’s water systems, the need for new and reliable [...]
MARCLAIMED Releases Official Video Showcasing Innovative Water Solutions for a Drought-Resilient Europe
As Europe faces mounting challenges from water scarcity and drought, the EU-funded MARCLAIMED project has launched its official video, introducing how it is pioneering new ways to secure sustainable water resources across the continent. The video highlights MARCLAIMED’s integrated approach, which combines two resilient solutions — Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) and Alternative Water Resources (AWR) — to address water stress and enhance Europe’s ability to cope with droughts. By improving how runoff and reclaimed water are stored, managed, [...]
How digital twins are being used in MARCLAIMED to monitor and optimise water management strategies
The MARCLAIMED project creates an integrated decision‑support environment built around a high‑fidelity digital twin of river‑basin and aquifer systems. Real‑time sensor feeds, including hydrological, meteorological, water‑quality and infrastructure data, are exchanged using the NGSI‑LD standard and are coupled with physics‑based hydraulic models, producing a continuously updated virtual replica of the water network across the three demonstration sites in Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands. This virtual replica serves as the foundation for three AI‑driven tools that work on a [...]
MARVIS: Nitrates Virtual Sensing for Safer Aquifer Recharge
Nitrate control is central to water safety, whether for general water supply systems or for managed aquifer recharge with alternative sources. While traditional laboratory testing provides reliable reference values, sampling and analysis often occur at fixed intervals, precluding continuous monitoring of conditions and associated risks. MARVIS is a digital tool that addresses this gap with an affordable and efficient approach based on artificial intelligence (AI). Instead of relying on expensive and specialised nitrate online probes, MARVIS functions as [...]
How MARCLAIMED’s Integrated Decision Support Tool (IDST) empowers water regulators, utilities and industry through data driven decision making
The Integrated Decision‑Support Tool (IDST) sits at the core of the MARCLAIMED project, translating streams of heterogeneous water‑related data, exchanged through the NGSI‑LD standard, into actionable insights for every stakeholder in the water‑value chain. For water regulators, the IDST aggregates real‑time telemetry from river gauges, groundwater wells, weather stations and remote‑sensing platforms into a single, standards‑compliant database. Advanced analytics then generate basin‑wide risk dashboards that highlight emerging drought, flood or contamination threats, allowing regulators to issue early warnings, [...]
MARCLAIMED Project Advances Innovative Water Solutions with Field Visit to Texel Pilot Site
The EU-funded MARCLAIMED project has successfully completed an insightful field visit to its demonstration site on the island of Texel, the Netherlands, advancing its mission to combat water scarcity in coastal regions. Last month, Nazim Uddin, a key Work Package Leader within the project, visited the site to study a cutting-edge Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) system designed to provide freshwater for agricultural use in saline environments. Texel is one of three critical demonstration sites for the MARCLAIMED [...]
Unlocking the Potential of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR)
MAR Approaches Across Demonstration Sites to Address Environmental and Socio-Economic Challenges The current challenges posed by extreme events and climate variability present both a threat and an opportunity. Flood events, such as heavy seasonal rains, can serve as valuable sources of water that can be stored for future use or for providing environmental benefits, such as supporting ecosystems. Other Alternative Water Resources (AWRs), such as Treated Wastewater (TWW), also offer significant potential for water reuse. Defined as the [...]
Business Models for Alternative Water Resources: Ensuring Economic Viability
Strategies for scaling up MAR solutions, including cost recovery models and market potential At MARCLAIMED, we are developing business models that ensure Alternative Water Resources (AWR) and Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) are not only technically feasible, but economically viable. With water scarcity threatening agriculture, industry, and ecosystems across Europe, the case for MAR is growing. Yet scaling up requires more than technology: it demands models for cost recovery, risk reduction, and real market uptake. Through Work Package 5, [...]
Europe’s Worsening Drought Crisis Sparks Urgent Call for Wastewater Reuse and Innovative Water Management
With the European Drought Observatory issuing stark warnings for Southern, Eastern, and Central Europe, a consensus is emerging among experts: the continent's escalating water crisis is a problem of management, not just scarcity. As leaders seek solutions, attention is turning to the vast, untapped potential of treated wastewater. According to the European Investment Bank, over 80% of Europe's wastewater is currently discharged without being reused—a missed opportunity for securing a vital resource. With countries like Spain and Cyprus [...]
MARCLAIMED Launches AWR4Climate Cluster Official Webpage to Unite European Efforts on Water Resilience
The MARCLAIMED project launched the official webpage featuring the Alternative Water Resources for Climate (AWR4Climate) Cluster, click here. This new digital hub serves as a central platform for three leading Horizon Europe projects, MARCLAIMED, RECREATE, and AWARD, uniting their efforts to enhance Europe’s water resilience against climate change. The newly launched website is designed to be the primary source of information and collaboration for the AWR4Climate initiative. As traditional water sources face increasing stress, the cluster is focused on [...]
Geophysical Investigation at the COMPORTA WWTP SAT-MAR Facility, Portugal, Demo Site Subtitle
As part of the ongoing investigations at the Comporta Demo site in Portugal, the LNEC team performed geophysical surveys on May 5th, 7th, 12th, and 19th 2025, focusing on the infiltration basin and surrounding upstream and downstream zones within the SAT-MAR system. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the infiltration pathway of secondary TWW through the vadose zone into the underlying aquifer, and to delineate a possible contamination plume in the saturated zone. To achieve [...]
