Open Day at Comporta WWTP Highlights the Potential of Managed Aquifer Recharge

The MARCLAIMED project brought together stakeholders at the Comporta Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Portugal on 29 October 2026 for an Open Day dedicated to exploring the potential of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) using alternative water resources.

Organised within the framework of the project’s Community of Practice (CoP), the event provided an opportunity to present the progress achieved at the Portuguese demonstration site, exchange knowledge and discuss how innovative water management solutions can contribute to greater water resilience.

Showcasing Progress at the Portuguese Demonstration Site

The Open Day welcomed representatives from different organisations and sectors interested in sustainable water resources management and the use of alternative water sources.

During the event, participants learned about the methodology adopted within MARCLAIMED, the objectives of the Portuguese case study, the results achieved so far and the next steps planned for the project.

The Comporta demonstration site focuses on exploring the potential of Managed Aquifer Recharge using alternative water resources (MAR-AWR), particularly through the use of treated wastewater to support more sustainable groundwater management.

A key highlight of the Open Day was a practical demonstration of the Water Quality Control Plan developed within the project. This gave participants an opportunity to better understand the monitoring activities underway and the importance of ensuring water quality when implementing MAR solutions.

Building Trust and Encouraging the Adoption of MAR Solutions

Beyond the technical presentations, the event encouraged exchanges between researchers, water professionals and other stakeholders on the opportunities and challenges associated with Managed Aquifer Recharge.

One of the main messages emerging from the discussions was the importance of building trust and increasing awareness of MAR solutions.

While technological innovation plays a crucial role, the successful adoption of these approaches also depends on knowledge sharing, practical demonstrations and stakeholder engagement.

By providing direct access to the activities carried out at the Comporta WWTP, the Open Day helped participants better understand the potential of MAR-AWR and its contribution to integrated and sustainable water resources management.

Strengthening Collaboration for Sustainable Water Management

The event represented another important step in MARCLAIMED’s efforts to connect research with practical applications and promote the wider understanding and acceptance of Managed Aquifer Recharge.

The project extends its thanks to LNEC (National Laboratory for Civil Engineering) and AgdA – Águas Públicas do Alentejo, as well as all participants and stakeholders who contributed to the Open Day.

Through continued collaboration, knowledge exchange and demonstration activities, MARCLAIMED aims to support the development and uptake of innovative solutions that strengthen water security and resilience to water scarcity.
