Exploring industrial water resilience opportunities at GCPC 2026 in Spain

Research identifying opportunities to apply MARCLAIMED solutions in industrial settings was presented at the 2nd Global Cleaner Production Conference in Sitges, Spain. The event brought together more than 540 participants from 85 countries, providing an international setting for exchanging knowledge on cleaner production and sustainable resource management.

Dr Hanna Jaroszek, from project partner Centre of Environmental Protection | Łukasiewicz – IMN, presented the study “Where Do Industrial Alternative Water Resources Matter Most? Opportunities for Managed Aquifer Recharge in Central and Eastern Europe”, developed as part of the organisation’s contribution to MARCLAIMED.

The study combined indicators of regional water stress, industrial water use and wastewater availability to identify promising opportunities for transferring MARCLAIMED solutions to industrial settings. By examining these factors together, the research helps identify where alternative water resources and Managed Aquifer Recharge could be particularly relevant to industrial water resilience in Central and Eastern Europe.

The conference provided an opportunity to share this work with an international research community and discuss its relevance to more sustainable industrial water management.

Alongside the MARCLAIMED contribution, Dr Krzysztof Rajczykowski, Director of the Centre, presented separate research on selective bromide recovery from industrial wastewater and its conversion into organobromine compounds. Together, the presentations illustrated the Centre’s wider work on water resilience and resource recovery.

Through its participation, Łukasiewicz – IMN increased the visibility of MARCLAIMED’s research and contributed to the exchange of knowledge on opportunities for more circular industrial water management.
