Paving the Way for Water Resilience: MARCLAIMED Success Showcased at AdP Engineering Days
On February 27, 2026, the MARCLAIMED project took center stage at the AdP Engineering Days, with AgdA – Águas Públicas do Alentejo, S.A. presenting the latest results from the Comporta Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) demo site.
The presentation highlighted the critical role of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) using alternative water sources—a core focus of our EU-funded initiative. By utilizing treated wastewater to replenish underground aquifers, the project is demonstrating innovative, sustainable solutions for the future of water resource management.
Why Alentejo?
The Alentejo region has been identified by the IPCC as particularly vulnerable to water stress. As climate change continues to impact weather patterns and water availability, traditional sources are under increasing pressure. In this challenging context, water reuse is no longer just an “alternative”—it is a strategic necessity. By recharging aquifers with reclaimed water, we are strengthening the region’s resilience and ensuring a more stable water cycle.
Award-Winning Innovation
The significance of this work has not gone unnoticed. We are proud to share that the case study developed at the Comporta WWTP (Alcácer do Sal), in close cooperation with LNEC (Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil), has been selected as one of the three finalists for the prestigious ERSAR Innovation Award 2025 in the Environmental Sustainability category.
This recognition by the Water and Waste Services Regulation Authority (ERSAR) validates the technical excellence and environmental impact of the MARCLAIMED project. It reinforces our commitment to transforming wastewater into a valuable resource, protecting our ecosystems, and securing water for the generations to come.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to monitor the results at the Comporta demo site!
