MARCLAIMED Hosts 4th Stakeholder Workshop in the Llobregat Basin

The MARCLAIMED project has reached a new milestone in its mission to enhance water security in the Mediterranean. Recently, the project held its fourth stakeholder workshop, bringing together the Community of Practice (CoP) to continue advancing toward water resilience in the Llobregat basin (Baix Llobregat).

Testing the Future of Water Management: The IDST

This session served as a hands-on platform for key agents in the region’s water management sector. Attendees had the unique opportunity to learn from the developers themselves, testing and evaluating the Integrated Decision Support Tool (IDST).

The IDST is a core output of MARCLAIMED, designed to provide data-driven recommendations for Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) using alternative water resources. The system includes:

  • 6 integrated tools focused on operational efficiency and economic sustainability.

  • A built-in Early Warning System (EWS) to ensure safety and reliability in water management.

Bridging the Gap: From Barriers to Solutions

Beyond the technical demonstrations, the workshop focused on practical implementation. Our colleagues Brais García Fernández and Ainhoa Quina led interactive dynamics aimed at prioritizing the solutions developed within the project. These activities were crucial for identifying the feasibility of various interventions and establishing clear pathways to overcome previously identified barriers.

The Llobregat basin serves as a vital case study for MARCLAIMED’s broader goals. By integrating Managed Aquifer Recharge with reclaimed water, the project seeks to mitigate water stress and manage the increasing frequency of droughts across Europe. The ultimate objective is to incorporate these innovative, nature-based solutions directly into official drought and hydrological management plans.

MARCLAIMED is coordinated by Cetaqua in collaboration with Aigües de BarcelonaVeolia | EspañaAgència Catalana de l’Aigua (ACA), and eight other international partners. The project is funded by the European Commission.
