Partners Highlights Barcelona’s Innovative Use of Managed Aquifer Recharge for Climate Resilience at ISMAR12

Partners from MARCLAIMED showcased the project during the 12th International Symposium on Managed Aquifer Recharge (ISMAR 12) held between 28 Apr – 2 May 2025 in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

The presentation, delivered by Beatriz de la Loma Gonzalez of the MARCLAIMED project, alongside Meritxell Minoves Ruiz representing Aigües de Barcelona, showcased how the city is leveraging advanced MAR techniques. This collaborative effort, also involving CETAQUA, focuses on the sustainable use of reclaimed water to bolster water resources in the face of climate change.

The session detailed Barcelona‘s proactive approach to integrating MAR into its water management framework, emphasising the use of high-quality reclaimed water to replenish aquifers. This not only secures additional water resources but also enhances the overall resilience of the region’s water supply system against climate-induced stresses such as drought and increased water demand.

The symposium fostered valuable dialogue among international experts, researchers, and practitioners, reinforcing the global momentum towards adopting innovative and sustainable MAR technologies. The MARCLAIMED project’s participation underscored its commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and practical applications in this critical field.
