MARCLAIMED Comporta Demo Site to be Showcased at the 14th Seminar on Groundwater

The 14th Seminar on Groundwater in Portugal is set to take place on December 5th and 6th, 2024, in Lisbon. This annual gathering brings together experts, researchers, and practitioners to explore innovative approaches to managing groundwater resources and addressing emerging challenges in the field.

MARCLAIMED partners from LNEC will showcase insights from the Comporta Demo Site and the work within the scope of the  project, with a presentation titled “Managed Aquifer Recharge Using Alternative Water Sources: The Case Study of Comporta.” The seminar will showcase the efforts to enhance trust and acceptance in MAR technology by highlighting innovative practices and monitoring strategies.

The LNEC presentation will provide an in-depth look at:

  • The Comporta Demo Site: A detailed introduction to the site and its role in advancing MAR systems.
  • Recent Actions: An overview of the installation of two Reactive Organic Layers (ROL) at the bottom of two of the four infiltration basins, carried out by LNEC and AgdA teams on September 16th and 17th, 2024.
  • Monitoring Efforts: Updates on the ongoing monitoring actions to assess the system’s performance.
  • Preliminary Results: Insights into how the MAR system is improving water quality during the Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT-MAR) process.

The 14th Groundwater Seminar will offer a platform for open dialogue on the latest developments in groundwater management, with a particular focus on Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) as a sustainable and innovative solution to address water scarcity and improve groundwater quality.
