Comporta Plant Champions Sustainable Water Reuse in Nature Reserve: Interview Use Case 2

In a new interview highlighted by the MARCLAIMED project, partners from Águas Públicas do Alentejo shared how Portugal’s Comporta Wastewater Treatment Plant is pioneering Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR). The facility sustainably reuses wastewater to enhance the Left-Margin Tejo-Sado aquifer, crucially located within a sensitive Nature Reserve.

This approach is vital for improving water quality, optimising infiltration rates, and managing groundwater, especially as the region experiences fluctuating dry and flooded periods. The Comporta demo site aims to strengthen public trust in reclaimed water and promote responsible aquifer recharge as an essential strategy for sustainable water management.
